Herbs for Boosting Testosterone Production

There are a number of herbs and botanicals – such as fenugreek, Korean ginseng, and tongkat ali – that have been shown to naturally and effectively work to raise testosterone production. This is good news for those who don’t want to take the route to medication or allopathic treatment, yet aim to boost their testosterone levels.


For starters, why would you want to raise your testosterone?


Testosterone is the hormone produced in the male body that’s responsible for many physical transformations and physiological functions. It occurs naturally, but can be given synthetically as a medication. The latter, however, may carry with it potential side effects.


Your testosterone levels have a hand in many changes in your body, including changes during puberty and your libido or sex drive. But it also has other wonderful traditional uses and properties, including increased libido, management of blood sugar and insulin, and augmenting growth hormone. What you should beware of, though, is fenugreek’s ability to boost prolactin, something that not readily appeals to men.
  • Horny Goat Weed – Its name is a dead giveaway: horny goat week works a la Viagra and Cialis, containing a PDE5 inhibitor to get you excited in bed and be able to maintain your momentum. This PDE5 inhibitor, called Icariin, may be good for testosterone as well in specific conditions.   • Korean Ginseng – There are different varieties of ginseng, and among the ones much-promoted for male enhancement is Korean ginseng. It has been shown to increase testosterone, especially for individuals suffering from androgen and fertility issues. It is seen to boost cAMP levels, which in turn boost testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH) and DHT levels in men with low sperm count. Additionally, Korean ginseng has showed promise in increasing nitric oxide and therefore erection quality. In certain studies, 600 milligrams taken three times daily were used.
  • Tribulis Terristris – This herb is controversial: one research showed that it increased testosterone, while a recent other found the opposite. The consensus is that Tribulis may benefit those with low testosterone or with certain types of hypogonadism, not really young, healthy men who have sufficient testosterone to begin with. It is also a potential winner in combating erectile dysfunction, as it increased both sex drive and nitric oxide levels. While inexpensive, it’s usually found in pricey formulations. Small daily amounts are from 500 to 800 milligrams.
  • Tongkat Ali – Found in the lush rainforests of Indonesia, Malaysia, and other Southeast Asian countries, tongkat ali has shown significant results in testosterone boost in both animal and human studies. In a study conducted in Brazil, the power of tongkat ali lies in its capacity to halt estrogen’s inhibitory effects on testosterone production. Tongkat ali is usually sold as an extract in capsule form, and the ideal ratio is 200:1 for a good amount of the active ingredients. Another good factor about this herb is that many users have been on tongkat ali therapy for years but have reported no remarkable adverse effect.


A word of caution: if you have compelling reason to think that you have low testosterone, it is best to consult your healthcare provider. This deficiency state is a serious medical state and will therefore have far-reaching consequences if left untreated.
